Solar water heating is the simplest way to utilize the sun’s rays to save energy and money. Actually, a solar system works much like the electric or gas system you probably have in your home right now. With a conventional water heater, cold water from the main water pipe enters the tank. When a sensor in the tank detects that the water temperature is too low, a heating element turns on to warm the water to the desired temperature.
A solar water heater actually has two temperature sensors(one at the tank, as in the electric heating system, and another one at the collector). When the sensors show that the water temperature in the tank is significantly lower than the temperature in the collector, a controller system activates a pump to circulate the water throught pipes in the collector. The sun’s rays then provide the primary source to heat the water. The principles of solar water heating are very basic and easy to understand. Think about what happens when you leave a garden hose in the backyard on a hot summer day. When you turn on the faucet, the water that comes out can be pretty hot.
The hose is actually acting like a solar collector,absorbing the heat of the sun and then transferring that heat to the water flowing trough it. That’s how solar water heating system work. Collector tubes inside an insulated box absorb the sun’s heat and transfer that heat to water or another liquid flowing trough the tubes. When you need hot water inside the house, the system draws this heated water in for your use. The key point is this:you’re using solar energy instead of gas, electricity, kerosene, oil, or any other type of fuel to heat the water in your home for cooking, bathing, and other uses. That energy isn’t going to run out, go up in price, or spew pollutants into the atmosphere. And, best of all an economic point ciew, the saving on your utility bill will pay for that system in just a few years.
