Solar Project Desertec – real possibility, real project

Some important investors such as Siemens AG, Deutsche Bank or the Energy supplier Eon, have shown keen interest in the DESERTEC Concept. The project is designed to build large wind farms and solar parks and other alternative energy sources such as Geothermal around  the North African continent coastlines and mainly on desserts. It will cost about 400 billion euros (that is $552 billion) and and will be capable of delivering electricity to Europe and other areas in ten years.

The Project will use the available technologies that have already been proven to work efficiently.

Concentrating Solar Thermal Power is the main technology to be used. It consists of the use of mirrors to concentrate the sun’s rays  to create heat which, in turn produces steam to finally, after driving turbines and generators, produces electricity.

But just like with The Sahara Forest Project, the concept still needs to surpass the political misunderstanding in order the get it started. It is also feared that building it in political unstable countries will create the same dependence as with oil today.  Still positive signals come from involved investors and countries representatives, who push with power from behind to make this Solar Mega-Project a near future reality.
