Eco, Eco, everybody Eco ! A green revolution is taking place ! It seems they can’t get enough of it. Another major Korean electronics company, Samsung,  is ready to do a major $4,3 billion (5.4 trillion Korean won) eco-investment into more environmentally-friendly, energy-efficient products for company’s plans to reduce carbon gas emissions in the production section, by 2013,  Samsung officials announced last week.

The bold plan involves spending $2.5 billion on research and development,  to improve the energy efficiency of TVs, mobile phones and other electronic devices they produce . Another $1.8 billion will help to cut gas emissions by 50% in their fabrication facilities and reducing the indirect carbon gas emissions from products  by 84 million tons.

The “PlanetFirst” plan implies for all Samsung products to better the Good Eco-Product criteria – a criteria from a eco-rating system developed by the company, where products are strictly evaluated on their green, eco-friendly features,  global eco-mark standards satisfaction and basic requirement from the industry. At the present moment only 50% of their merchandise comply with the newly presented condition. That means more environmentally-friendly and reusable materials to be adopted in the production process.

The standby power use of it’s products is mainly one watt. The challenge is to reduce it to half a watt.

Some part of the sum will be used to harden and support green, environmental initiatives and suppliers will also be stimulated to cooperate on an eco-level.

The company is present in 61 countries and has 164,600 employers. In making computer memory chips, the company is number one in the world.

Samsung is “committing to becoming a truly green enterprise that places eco-management at the very heart of our business decision-making and growth,” noted CEO Yoon-Woo Lee at the eco-investment presentation.

“This eco-management initiative will encompass all of our global operations, supply chain, and the complete life cycle of Samsung products, and by achieving these goals we aim to lead the way in tackling the environmental problems that are facing our planet” he added.
