Rewave – A Portable Water Desalination Device Which Uses Wave Energy
1 November 2009 | Green Technology | 3 Comments
Let’s say you plan to take a trip somewhere in the vicinity of the ocean but sometime along the way your water supply rans out. With only salty water around you, you might need some equipment to try make it potable. Why not take the Rewave with you ?
Rewave is a design by Yu-Hong Chen, which can desalinate the sea water using one of the most effective water purification method, reverse osmosis. The portable device floats in water and is getting its power from the energy of the waves that hit the shores. Reverse osmosis requires a great of pressure in order to function, therefore the absorption area of the device is placed at the bottom, so that the pressure can be contained and the sea water can get to the motor area. At the end of the process, the fresh, drinkable water is collected at the top of the container.
The only downside of the design are the filters. They get dirty pretty fast and need frequent replacement. On the other hand, they are made from recyclable materials and wouldn’t cost so much.
