Alligator Fat Could be Turned Into Very Efficient Biodiesel

23 August 2011 | Alternative Energy | 1 Comment

In recent years people were very busy with finding new ways to create cheap biodiesel. Now, even it may sound weird, researchers from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette announced that they found a  way to produce biodiesel using Alligator lipids (fat).

Every year alligator skin and meat industry throws away over 15 million pounds of alligator fat considering it as a non-usable byproduct. But why we have to trow this fat when we could power our cars with it? Think about it. It may even become a very popular and successful brand among biodiesel producers.

New Fuel Cell-Based Charger Uses Soil Microbes to Produce Energy

11 May 2011 | Alternative Energy | No Comments

A team of researchers from the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, managed to develope a cellphone charger that uses the microbes in the soil to generate electricity. This fuel cell-based charger could be a real solution in third world countries, where people still lack power.

According to Dr. Aviva Presser Aiden, the mind behind this project, this new device is not very hard to build (it could be built for even less than a dollar’s cost).

Water Powered Jetpack Provides Two Hours of Continuous Flight

5 May 2011 | Alternative Energy | No Comments

In recent years, we all heard about water powered cars or water powered bikes but have you ever imagined that people will be able to fly using a water powered device? I don’t! But now, Raymond Li comes with his Jetlev-Flyer and says: yes, this thing can provide up to two hours of continuous flight.

When he decided to buid this water-powered Jetpack many engineers told him it’s impossible. They didn’t belived that water will flow with such a high pressure that it can keep one person in the air. Talking about the stability of this jetpack in the air, scientists were also sceptics.

The First Stable Artificial Leaf Was Developed by MIT Researchers

11 April 2011 | Alternative Energy | No Comments

Researchers at MIT University have developed an artificial leaf that can utilize sunlight for “photosynthesis”. The leaf will help extracting hydrogen from water in order to produce clean electricity. Made of silicon, some electronic components and low-cost chemical catalysts, this artificial leaf represents an important advancement in the field of chemistry.

The first artificial leaf was developed ten years ago by John Turner of the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory. That leaf was unstable and could not produce energy constantly more than one day. Unlike it, the newly developed leaf can produced a constant output of power for 45 continuous hours.

Urine Could Power our Vehicles Better than Water

23 March 2011 | Alternative Energy | No Comments

Urine: alternative-fuel. We all know human urine as a waste, but how many of you learned about its utility as an alternative fuel. Scientists at Ohio University stuns with their new discovery: urine can be transformed in hydrogen.  Often, we have to go to the toilet when we drive and this can be really unpleasant sometimes.

Now, this new discovery may solve the problem of bathroom breaks, anytime you leave home in a long road trip. With a little imagination, we can see how useful it can be for us. Think about this: you drive on a road where you can not “hide” to make your needs. :) In this case, your car tank is the only solution left.
