Enercon E-126 is The World’s Largest Wind Turbine

24 February 2011 | Wind Power | 1 Comment

A new wind turbine was installed in Emden, Germany: Enercon E-216. It is the largest wind turbine in the world. Maybe you’ve heard about E-112 turbine but this one is even larger. Despite the fact that E-112 is rated at 6 megawatts, this new one will most likely produce 7+megawatts.

After some calculations, Enercon E-216 can produce 20 million kilowatt hours per year, enough to power 5,000 households. Such a turbine produce 11,256 kwh per year per house, so it can power 1776 American homes. German researchers have big plans with their huge turbines. They started to test different storage systems in combination with the multi-megawatt wind turbine.

Wind Gusts Predicting Technology Could Increase Wind Turbines Efficiency

9 December 2010 | Wind Power | No Comments

British firm Quiet Revolution came up with a new method to improve the efficiency of small wind turbines in urban areas. In these places, wind turbines efficiency is frequently affected by buildings that block the wind. In order to prevent those situations researchers have decided to take advantage of those periods when wind reaches its maximum speed.

After many tests, British researchers concluded that they could capture more energy by predicting when gusts of wind will occur. So, in order to capture the maximum amount of energy, they have designed a system called Gust Tracking, able to match wind turbines speed to the wind velocity.

Recharge Your iPhone Battery Using iFan Wind-Powered Charger

8 December 2010 | Wind Power | No Comments

iFan is a new wind-powered charger for iPhone. It was created by Tjeerd Veenhoven and it is perfect for all those who want to recharge their cellphone batteries while walking around town.

“By using a modified computer fan it took me 6 hours to charge my phone, rather long I think… but it works. I can shave off many charging hours by redesigning the fan blades, making it more efficient in catching the wind while sun bathing at the beach, doing walking trips in the mountains or just holding it outside your car window while driving along…”, said Dutch designer Tjeerd Veenhoven.

Alta Wind Energy Center will Power 600,000 Homes in Southern California

27 July 2010 | Wind Power | 2 Comments

After temperature, one of the most significant weather phenomenon in the Mojave dessert, is wind. Windy days are common across this region so, considering this advantage Terra-Gen Power has planned to build there, the largest wind power project in the country(Alta Wind Energy Center). A huge area of thousands of acres will be mobilized to generate energy for 600,000 homes in  Southern California. At a distance of about 75 miles north of Los Angeles, in the Tehachapi Pass, they will install hundreds of towering turbines which will generate, as they say, three times as much energy as the country’s largest existing wind farms.
